Taken from my old, deactivated CarThrottle profile: I decided to make a new post every week, called the “Weekly Rant”. In these posts I tackle some of the most ridiculous or stupid things in the car world. My first victim is the Finnish electric supercar: the Toroidion.
The Toroidion is indeed a Finnish electric car, that claims to be super. But is it? Well, the latest article about it states the following: Price 995,000 euros, top speed of 450 kph, and fully electric. Now, I should be loyal to my own country product, but f*ck it. Those performance claims are completely ridiculous. When was the last time a wealthy business man thought; “Hey, I’m going to make a car that’ll do 400+ kph”. Not too long ago.
Since the amazing Veyron, people have tried to exceed the magical 400 kph mark. Yet, only a few have pulled it off. Why? Money. Money is the key here. Money gets you clever engineers. Money gives you a huge, powerfull engine full of stallions. Money gives you everything. Unfortunately, this car is made in Finland. We are not exactly known for fast cars. Or anything, really. We are also not to richest country in the world, which is a slight setback. Without these resources, the Toroidion is a lost cause. With only one man’s vision, and only one company funding them, it’s hard to see how this car would ever get made.
Then I have to come back to the performance claims. 450 kph, they say. From 0 to 400 kph in ONLY 11 seconds? That’s full on rubbish. Why would they make these idiotic claims? Do they think we’re idiots? I mean, I know that the reporter who wrote the article also mistook a Jag F-type to a Nissan GT-R. But Toroidion themselves say these are official stats.
I’m not even sorry if you might like it. I like it. I like the look of it. I like the not so elegant interior. I like it despite being electric. But those stupid “out of your ar*e” claims ruin it for me. It would be brilliant if it really could make it 450 kph. But the range would suck balls. And who is going to buy an electric with a range of 10 kilometers? Of course, they say the range is 515 kilometers. They also say it packs 1350 horsepower. And that it weights just 1040 kilos and the production model will apparently weight even less.
I know that I might be a bit unfair. Who knows, maybe it will do 450 kph with a range of 515 kilometers. But still, anybody with a healthy head on their shoulders would not buy it. Why? There’s just too much competition. And it’s a first attempt by an unknown Finnish company. I mean, there’s Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Pagani, Tesla, etc. So whose going to say: “Yes, I’ll take that Finnish car, because I don’t want a car with a history or experience”. No one will.
