@tribe Seeing if we can get this chat up and going. I'll begin by asking what's the best mod for a MR2? Or perhaps saving your wallet and your sanity is the way to go?

I'd love a 2zz for mine, however my other project car is receiving all my love (money) at the moment

The project car being?

unfortunately the safest route is the longest: removing the engine and trans together, I could provide you a link to the walkthrough of the easiest method if needed.
I'm planning on dropping a 3SGTE into my MK1, but lately I've been working on a plan to make ground effect downforce while still keeping the car daily-able

what gen and what have you considered/done for downforce so far?
1987 MK1b; current plan is front splitter with a kaminari aero body kit and a GT style adjustable rear wing, then budget windtunnel tweaks. If I get a good chunk of cash I've also got an idea for using a megasquirt GPIO module to make active aero for the rear wing. The ground effect idea is to make enough traction to account for my end goal of getting the 3SGTE up to 400+ HP without crashing

Nice, at some point I'll be completing the 2GR swap on my Sw20, but there's an MK1a that I've been considering and it may have to happen before the swap is completed.

sounds utterly fantastic! How are you enjoying it?
Oliver Belfiore
27/01/2020
Is it that necessary to have that much downforce around 400hp. I mean I get that it improves it but it seems like a lot of effort!
Oliver Belfiore
27/01/2020
Got to say that the 2GR sounds a bit more appealing. But it will cost you a liver and a kidney no?
Nick Villar
27/01/2020
yeah it'll cost me a bit more than say a gen4/5 swap, but I'll be glad once it's done. The aw11 will be getting an gen4 down the road, if I do obtain it.
Oliver Belfiore
28/01/2020
fantastic to hear you having it planned out atleast

A day at a time! It's changed over the course. What gen do you have?
Oliver Belfiore
28/01/2020
gen 3, recently finished fitting new steering wheel, sparco goes in soon and entire 2zz swap with new transmission, exhaust, lsd & coldairintake aswell in april
It isn't necessary at 400HP, but that's actually just goal #1; goal #2 is to then go all out and aim for 600-700 with a stroker kit, bigger turbo, water meth or full e85 conversion, and a wet nitrous kit. Basically working towards a budget built supercar long-term.
Oliver Belfiore
29/01/2020
that's crazy ambitious! Have you ever done something similar?
I haven't, but I've got the time & money to get there in about 5-6 years plus a local shop that specializes in doing this type of stuff to MR2s
Oliver Belfiore
29/01/2020
sounds like s great plan! You don't happen to live in Warwickshire?
Nope, Seattle area actually

About 2300 miles west of them; my local guys are Rat2 Motorsports

Help me out! 15" or 16" rims and what tire/rim combo would you go for?

3SGE and the S54 is fairly easy. its not a 5 min job, but with basic tools you can do it yourself. if you have a read of the BGB (big green book) it will give you a lot of the info. but there is a How to on the MR2Owners forum that explains how to do an engine swap on the 3SGE, and part of it is removing the gearbox and changing the clutch. packed full of pictures too. you may find it just as easy to drop the complete engine/box and pull it apart when its on the deck. get to the other goodies like Hose from hell. www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your2/mk2/97-mk2-engine/557-how-to-3sge-to-3sge-engine-change.html

depends on which MR2 you have. Mk2's look good on 16" but the choice of tyres for both 15" and 16" is getting a bit tricky. Mk1's look sweet on some old school 15"'s, and Mk3's seem to like 17"'s but you loose a bit of the comfort when you change from the 15"'s and thicker sidewalls.

Hi all, I have an '87 Mk1 NA MR2 T-bar... I like my cars standard but I have to admit, the paint job, wheels, cone filter and exhaust are not original. It's my second Mk1, the first being a sunroof model and I love these cars to bits. I just wish I had a garage to keep it out of the harsh, constantly changing weather.
